Tkachenko tells the incredible story of a man who spent almost a year captive in Germany at the beginning of World War I after participating in the Mannheim chess events of 1914, endured the hardships of the Civil War and NEP Russia, won two Soviet championships and survived. the horrors of the siege of Leningrad in 1941-42, suffering an unspeakable family tragedy while he did so. Romanovsky narrowly escaped premature death on three separate occasions.
