This full-color book, based on original paintings from museums and private collections, has been compiled by Dr. Vladimir Kudryavtsev, who has published many volumes on national and regional visual art of the Soviet and pre-Soviet periods.
Galina Satonina (1905-2000) was the leading chess painter of the Soviet era. Several times women's chess champion of Kazan and Tatarstan, she saw life as a game of chess, and her paintings speak the language of Caissa. He painted world champions and other famous players, from the first stars Philidor, Morphy and Anderssen, to Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov. Several of his paintings depict chess pieces and the emotions felt during the game, as well as different aspects of the game, such as time constraints and checkmate.
Satonina's works were exhibited in Soviet-era world championship matches. Much was written about them in the Soviet and international chess press, including Shakhmaty v. the USSR, 64 and Ceskoslovensky Sach.
