The Ruy Lopez is possibly the most classic of chess openings. White immediately begins the battle for center, fighting for the lead. This strategic clarity has made the Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Open, a perennial favorite of chess players of all levels. Inevitably, this popularity has also given rise to a great deal of aperture theory.
This one-volume, crystalline repertoire covers fifteen major variations, from the classical lines to the anti-Marshall (8.a4), and from the Schliemann (3... f5) to the modern Steinitz. In an easy-to-understand manner, Caruana explains the general characteristics, such as permanent weaknesses, long-term goals, and always looks for an advantage for whites.
The knowledge of World #2 in this classic opening, will not only greatly improve your results in Ruy Lopez, but also sharpen your general knowledge of chess. Inspired by the show ChessBase navigating by Ruy Lopez.
Fabiano Caruana became a grandmaster at the age of 14. Since his majestic win in the 2014 Sinquefield Cup tournament, he has been the undisputed No. 2 in the world of chess. In 2018 he won the right to challenge Magnus Carlsen in a match for the World Championship and narrowly lost in the play-off.
