In chess, as in real life, temptations are often faced: capturing a pawn, occupying an open file, initiating an attack on the kingside, etc. In essence there is nothing wrong with this, but before taking concrete actions, you must make sure that the position is ripe for it. Chess is so complicated that making the right decision by pure calculation is not always possible. That's where general rules and principles come to our aid to distinguish between what we would like to do and what we really should do in a certain phase of the game. In other words, it's a matter of establishing the right order of priorities.
