We pay tribute to Viktor Korchnoi, "the Terrible", the eternal aspirant to the world chess crown. He was born on 23 March 1931 in Leningrad and died on 6 June 2016 in Wohlen. During the 1970s and 1980s he maintained a fierce rivalry with Anatoli Karpov. After his defection from the Soviet Union in 1976, he became one of the most influential Western chess players. His career spanned more than six decades, during which he remained among the world's best players, notable for his ambitious playing style and deep strategic understanding.
